Candelaria to Malpaís de Güímar coastal run

A moderately technical trail leads from the picturesque town of Candelaria to an easy, well-maintained track around the volcanic Malpaís de Güímar nature reserve. The route circles around a volcano, meanders through fields of cacti, and hugs a stunning coastline of black lava.

From the impressive Basilica of Candelaria a road takes us to the start of the coastal trail at the edge of town. It is moderately difficult and great fun as it zig zags up and down rocky inclines. In the village of El Socorro an ascent towards the Montaña Grande volcano starts. The trail flows around the volcano back down to the coast or one can attempt a detour to climb the rim on very steep, loose gravel.

Cacti and other flora and fauna thriving in a lunar landscape are the most fascinating aspects of this run. The technical parts require some concentration.
