This leisurely route starts right in the heart of the old town of Lagos and follows wooden walkways along one of the Algarve’s most photographed stretches of coast. A dramatic limestone coastline is formed of sea pillars and rock arches, which makes it an incredibly popular tourist destination. Start early and off season!

After pounding the city’s pavement along the river channel, a boardwalk comprises most of the run. It is possible to jump off onto eroded, flowing trails along the way. Add zero shade to steadily increasing crowds as another reason for an early morning run. A detour down to Praia do Camilo via a steep staircase adds some elevation to an easy 11,5km round.

Praia de Dona Ana is a popular Lagos beach with a beach bar and great, protected swimming.

The views are magnificent and the limestone forms intricate shapes including deep sinkholes, but a well-developed, wooden track takes away some of the pure nature experience. A bonus is finishing the run along the narrow, picturesque old town streets of Lagos. The city makes for a great, lively base to explore the region – I stayed here just before Easter and would recommend to avoid the main season.
