Sweeping vistas across the sea, beaches, and cliffs from a flowing coastal trail make this a great run to explore the heart of the Algarve coastline. The trail is in excellent condition and very well secured, which makes it suitable for any skill level. Alas, as one of the most popular walks in Portugal’s most touristy region, it can become very crowded. It is best done off-season and early in the morning – there is little shade.

From Praia do Vale de Centeanes a well-trodden trail climbs the cliff and leads to the magnificent Farol de Alfanzina. The path is well secured by rope along steeper cliff edges and around a plethora of spectacular sinkholes. Just beyond the lighthouse the views culminate at the Leixão do Ladrão with grottos, arcs and caves, with the famous Cave of Benagil just beyond – an extremely popular destination for boating tours and walks.

Praias do Carvalho and Benagli are the favored beaches to start exploring the grottos and arcs by kayak or swimming.

At the breathtaking, and less crowded, Praia da Marinha, the trail loops inland over a variation of trails and road to return to the coast for the way back at Praia do Pontal, one of three narrow beaches.
