Starting in the picturesque mountain town of Vilaflor this excellent circuit gains a fair bit of elevation in two steep ascents through fragrant pine forests reaching impressive natural formations and columns of eroded ash and pumice deposits. It takes an interesting, little-used trail, away from other hikers, for the last part leading to the famous Paisaje Lunar.

Steep steps are followed by a level, slightly overgrown and disused forest trail to the Madre del Agua campground – alternatively, a short cut along the regular hiking route to the same destination can be taken. After a long, steep climb, it takes some time to catch our breath while exploring and navigating the labyrinthine columns and bizarre rock formations.

A wide, well-maintained path flows back to the starting point in a gentle decline.
